Four to six months pregnant is when most families lock in their newborn session. It sounds early, but the first few weeks after birth fill up faster than you’d expect, and the window for newborn photography is shorter than most people realise.

When to book your newborn session
Most families book somewhere between four and six months pregnant, which sounds early until you realise how quickly the first few weeks after birth fill up. You don’t need a name, a nursery, or any idea what you’re doing yet. You just need to lock in the spot.
When you book, we pencil in a session around 10 days after your due date, and once baby arrives, you let us know and we adjust the date if needed.
The newborn window and why it matters
Newborns change fast. The curled-up, tucked-in, deeply-asleep quality that makes newborn photography look the way it does is most achievable in the first two to three weeks. After that, babies start stretching out, waking up more, and losing some of that just-arrived softness.
We aim to shoot between day 5 and day 18. It’s a short window, which is exactly why booking early matters.

What the day actually looks like
Sessions run for up to three hours at our Myaree studio, and there’s no rush. If baby needs a feed when you walk in, we start after the feed. If they need three feeds throughout, we stop three times. The session moves at baby’s pace, always.
We’ll guide you through everything. You don’t need to know how newborn posing works, how wrapping works, or what you’re supposed to do with your hands. That’s all ours. Your job is just to be there.
Baby isn’t the only one we’re here to photograph. The images of baby curled against your chest, or tucked into both your hands, are often the ones families come back to most. They’re also the ones that tend to include the person who grew and carried and organised all of this. She belongs in these photos. We’ll make sure she’s in them.
If you have older children, a partner, or a dog who’s part of the family, we can include them. We usually find it works best to bring everyone else in for part of the session rather than the whole thing, so there’s plenty of time for the quieter moments too.

What happens if baby won’t settle
They sometimes don’t, and that’s completely fine. A feed, a nappy change, a cuddle, a walk around the studio. Whatever baby needs, we do. There’s no version of this that gets unravelled by a baby being a baby.
We’ve shot hundreds of newborn sessions. Nothing here is a surprise.

What you actually need to do
Not much. We’ll walk you through everything before the day, including a few practical things like what to dress baby in and how to think about feeds on the morning of the session. Beyond that, the preparation is ours.
The rest is just you, your baby, and a few hours to soak it all in. In those early weeks, that’s a rare and lovely thing.
These weeks go fast. We’ll make sure you have something beautiful to show for it.
