newborn sessions

If your thinking of a newborn session, please call to schedule your session while your still expecting.  The ideal age is around 7 days, I’ll enter you due date in my schedule and squeeze you in when the baby arrives.  If your baby has already arrived and you have not booked your session, give me a call and I will still do my best to fit you in.

The majority of the images you see in the newborn gallery on my site were captured within the first 10 days of life.  At this time the baby is still young enough to be sleepy and “curled up” for bare images, is more likely to stay asleep so that poses may be varied, etc.  As babies get a little older (although it is strange to consider a one month old “older,” I know!) we can still capture darling images of them with Mum and Dad, swaddled, or gazing intently, but it can be harder to obtain naked, sleeping images.  The sessions are lovely regardless, the images just might be a little bit different from some of what you see on my site.  A bonus of the slightly older newborn, however, is a greater likelihood of capturing their beautiful, alert wide-eyed expressions.

The newborn session it’s self  is like all Lilypad sessions, relaxed and stress free.  I will take all the time needed to capture your gorgeous baby and parents and siblings are encouraged to be a part of the session.  We often stop for feeds and follow your babies lead, so the session is often a little longer than normal.  Usually around 2 hours but sometimes 3 or more.

in the studio or at home?

I offer newborn sessions both in the Melville studio or in your home.  The primary difference between newborns at the studio or in the client’s home is twofold.  First, newborns at home take on a more “lifestyle” or environmental feel as we are able to capture them in their very first home and incorporate their surroundings in a meaningful way. On the other hand, clients who come to the studio do bring blankets, hats, etc. from home so there’s a touch of that in the studio as well.  The primary benefit to the studio – other than that it is a great option if your home is lacking in natural light – is that the bare, contented images of newborns that you see on my site are much more easily captured in the studio.  It’s truly a matter of preference and either is lovely.  If capturing bare, curled-up images are a top priority for you, you will want to elect a studio newborn session. If swaddled images of your baby in his or her very first home are important, you’ll wish to choose an at-home session. I enjoy both types of shoots equally and, regardless of location, I always follow the baby’s lead with lots of time for nappy changes, nursing, etc.  I try to keep things as relaxed and stress-free as they can possibly be during such a harried yet wondrous time!
